Unfailing Love

This morning, I was reading though Psalm 6. This is a powerful psalm where David is seeking God’s grace and mercy. He has perhaps sinned or at least he feels that he deserved the wrath of God. He begs God to not pour out his wrath, but to pour out his grace and mercy on him. He never demands that God offer this mercy because he deserves it. He begs God to offer it because it will bring glory and honor to God. In verse 4, he asked God to “deliver him, because of his unfailing love”. That term stuck me so I thought I would do a little research on it.
I found that the Hebrew word (chesed) is a very common word, especially in the book of Psalms. The word is used 244 times in the OT, while 126 of those times are in the book of Psalms. The word is actually used twice for every 1000 words in the book of Psalms (pretty common). The word literally means,

unfailing love, loyal love, devotion, kindness, often based on a prior relationship, especially a covenant relationship (Hebrew/Aramaic to English Dictionary and Index to the NIV Old Testament, Edward W. Goodrick, John R. Kohlenberger III, and James A. Swanson, 1999)

This a great word and David was very fond of using it. He understood that there is no sin too great to cancel out this love. There is no slip up that we can commit that would invalidate this sort of love. You see, our God is a God of unfailing love.
