Concerning Practical Atheism

David said in Psalm 14,

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

He then goes on in the next few verses to describe the result of believing there is no God: corruption, vileness, no one who does good, not even one. Those who believe God does not exist are, according the to Bible, fools. Scientists and scholars with PhD’s that the world considers brilliant, God considers foolish. Non-Christian scientists and Christian scientists all look at the exact same evidence. They simply choose to interpret that evidence differently. When you consider the evidence from a Biblical standpoint, you see that it overwhelmingly points to a Creative Designer (God). There is very little support or logic behind trying to explain our existence without God. Top-ranking atheist scientists are fools because they will look past a mountain of evidence in support of God to find a molehill to twist against Him.

But look what else David said. The fool says in his heart . . . What does this mean? Is it possible to say one thing with your lips and another with your heart? Do you think there are people who go to church, maybe even in our own church, who praise with their lips but deny in their heart?

Can you believe something in your heart without it affecting your life? I say no. If you truly believe something, it will affect your life. For example, I believe in the Law of Gravity. As a result, I get really nervous when I’m on my roof cleaning out the gutters and I am very cautious. I believe falling off the roof will land me on the ground seriously injured. Therefore, I am careful when on the roof. What I believe affects how I live. Oh, you can acknowledge something in your head without it changing your life, but acknowledging is different from believing. There are many people who acknowledge God. Yet their lives are unchanged. If you believe in your heart God does exist, it will change you. This change may not be immediately noticeable on the outside, but you will immediately notice it in your heart.

True faith expresses itself in a person’s life - this is a spiritual law, just as gravity is a natural law. This law works with all faith, not just Christian faith. Muslims have faith, and it expresses itself in their lives. David points out in this psalm that fools (atheists) believe there is no God. Their belief expresses itself in their lives through corruption. Faith - good or bad - expresses itself in life. James knew this law of faith when he wrote in his book that faith without works is dead. What he was saying is that faith which does not change a person is dead because it never lived to begin with - it is stillborn faith, acknowledging with your head, but not saying in your heart. So, don’t be a fool. Believe and praise in your heart, not just with your lips.
